From Silicon Valley to Appalachia: Why the tech industry is interested in coal country
By Jessica Denson
They may be on opposite sides of the country and seem like they have very different things to offer the country, but Silicon Valley has its sights set on Appalachia. California Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna visited Paintsville, KY, last week to talk jobs and tech training in what’s been traditionally coal country. The freshman Representative said he wants to expand the Silicon Valley success story across the U.S and use it to promote economic prospects in places like Paintsville. During his visit, Khanna said it’s time for the tech industry that’s played a role in shedding American jobs—by advancing artificial intelligence, among other things—to invest in helping communities like Paintsville share in the upside. Kentucky Rep. Hal Rogers, who attended the event with Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, was eager to have Khanna in what he calls the “Silicon Holler.” The Kentucky Republican, whose district is among the poorest in the nation, said it was a...

Senators ask FCC Chairman to Support Rural and Working-class Area Students
By Jessica Denson
Two U.S. Senators write a letter to the Federal Communications Commission Chairman urging him to protect the e-Rate program. The federal program, funded through telephone charges, supports internet access to schools and libraries. Democratic Sen. Ed Markey and Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan sent this letter on March 17 to Chairman Ajit Pai.   In the letter, they write “for many communities, these schools and libraries are the only source for free public internet access.” Connected Nation supports efforts to connect every student and community by bridging the Digital Divide through our community engagement and mapping programs.  We’re also working to help school districts build advanced Internet, cloud, and network services that will enable innovative and transformational education delivery models for the future of teaching and learning.

Broadband Connectivity and Your Health
By Jessica Denson
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai visited the Cleveland Clinic on March 16 to discuss the Connect2HealthFCC Task Force. According to a press release from the FCC, Pai was impressed by the innovative work the Cleveland Clinic is doing in telehealth, particularly in the area of life-saving tele-stroke services. “With technology-based solutions like this, health care providers can deliver high-quality care to patients anywhere,” Pai said.  “Expanding the reach of medical expertise with connectivity illustrates the potential of broadband to improve people's lives, particularly in rural and underserved areas.” Pai is the son of two doctors who have practiced in a small Kansas town. He said his parents’ experiences helped him understand why telehealth and the connectivity that’s necessary to practice in rural areas is important. It’s just one of many reasons Connected Nation believes that states, communities, families, and...

FCC Chairman Looking to Internet-based Technology to Create Jobs, Improve Lives
By Jessica Denson
Promoting infrastructure, easing regulatory barriers, and connecting America’s unserved communities were just some of the important challenges the nation’s new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman, Ajit Pai, says he’ll address in the coming months. Chairman Pai spoke Wednesday, March 15 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg. It was his first major policy address since taking on the role with the FCC. In his remarks, the Chairman outlined a continued focus on bringing economic opportunities through broadband to the nation’s most underserved areas. You can read Connected Nation’s full policy brief here which details Pai’s Four Guiding Principles and his policies to promote infrastructure and innovation.
